From Language To Design
Stools in Tones 2010

The change of tone in Chinese is to meet the demand of the needs for new words, therefore new creations. The sound is adjusted into different tones, like the structure of an object is rearranged to create different objects.

Chinese words are used as reference for objects and tones as the connection “sound”. “ji” is used as an example. If we pronounce “ji” in high rising tone means 椅 (chair), in high falling tone means 衣 (clothing). New objects are created based on difference in tones.
